Pool and Spa Cleaning

There are many reasons why you need to maintain your pool on a weekly basis:

  • Hygiene
  • Safety
  • Identification of faults
  • Avoidance of unnecessary repairs/replacement of expensive equipment
  • And not least…its makes using the pool a more enjoyable experience.

The safety is a pool is paramount – most owners would not leave a child or animal unsupervised around a pool, indeed many houses are now fitted with pool door alarms or fences…so why take the chance that once in the water you, your children, your visitors or your customers could be harmed? If the correct chemical balance is not maintained (whether your pool is fresh or salt water) you are playing a safety lottery.

Your pool is like any other container of water left outside 24/7 – 365 days a year. The waters chemical balance alters constantly, and its natural ability to inhibit toxins and germs diminishes with fluctuations in its temperature, water level and water mix (i.e. the water you add to it from the faucet and rain water it collects naturally).

If the correct chemical balance is not maintained an “easy to see” result is that the water turns green/yellow or even (if left long enough) black….unfortunately though, it is not always the easy to see changes that can cause problems – without proper treatment and chemical balance pool water can harbor germs that can cause skin irritations, ear infections and breathing difficulties.

Debris needs to be removed from the pool (and even when pools have a cage/screen – they still have debris). This debris can be the cause of a chemical imbalance and in itself can cause algae to grow. Debris can clog the pools equipment and if not cleaned regularly your pools filter can reduce the water flow which allows algae to pollute the water, or the more expensive problem (for you the pool owner) is when the filter blocks and causes the pool pump to break. If debris is left it can also cause staining to the sides and bottom of the pool which can be expense to remove (see stain removal section).

These are just some of the reasons to keep you pool clean, but not all pool companies are created equal…so see our section on Maintenance for what you should and shouldn’t expect from your pool guy!
